"Jupiter Ascending" at #Sundance is a gaudy, campy space opera where Star Wars meets Brazil meets the Matrix with fun and action all around.
At a surface gaze, there's nothing original storywise showcased in Jupiter Ascending that we haven't seen in other scifi/space operas movies or read in scifi novels, all the worn-out tropes are in there: The Chosen One, the damsel in distress, the charming knight fighting to save her from the evil space lord that cruelly wants to rule the universe, spaceships battles, scifi visuals taken from every videogame concept artbooks, wacky creatures, dynasties fighting each other to conquer the galaxy, rebels against evil empire and so on.
The thing is the execution, how Wachos will render all of this exciting and fresh, how those common tropes are treated through a new lens like they did with Matrix putting Necromancer, anime, Kung-Fu Pian, Baudrillard's philosophy, Campbell's Hero with thousand faces, BDSM imagery...into a giant pop mix to deliver something that looked new enough to general audience.

On dirait une version scary movie de Strange Days.
10/10
Just got out of the movie and it’s trash. Mindless YA sci-fi garbage. Potatohead is a zero charisma non-entity, as usual, and Kunis is a deadeyed monotone nothing, as usual.
“I hated it,” said one of the festival’s volunteers, who asked not to be identified for fear of irking Sundance. “It’s just ridiculous.”
Her husband was more forgiving. “It’s a combination of a whole bunch of things wrapped into one,” he said.
Neville Kiser, a screenwriter, thought the movie was hurt by the fact that it was debuting at a venue for highbrow films. “I actually liked it,” Kiser said. “But the Sundance context is weird. There were so
many people in the audience scoffing and sneering. They are forgetting they are watching a movie targeted primarily to teenage boys. I’m sure those 15-year-old boys, and hopefully girls, will like it too.”
